May 6--DeSales Wagster will step down from her position as president and CEO of the Cabarrus County Convention & Visitors Bureau about five months before her contract ends to take a job at Speedway Motorsports Inc., according to CVB board members.
Terry Crawford, general manager of Embassy Suites in Concord and chairman of the CVB board, said he will be the interim CEO until a replacement can be found.
"We're happy DeSales is going to work for Mr. (Bruton) Smith," Crawford said. "The CVB is very forward-thinking. We're going to go on the search immediately and find the right CEO that can take us in a new direction."
Wagster could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
Wagster came from Duluth, Ga., where she was the executive vice president of ProAdvisors, Inc., a meeting planning and hospitality marketing firm.
She also has served as president of the Alpharetta Ga. Convention and Visitors Bureau, which she founded in 1998. The budget for that organization grew from $360,000 to more than $2.9 million in hotel tax revenue under her leadership. In 2004, Wagster was let go from her position as president, but was kept on as a consultant.
Wagster replaced former Cabarrus CVB director Ann Sternal, who left in June 2006 with an annual salary of $62,000. Sternal left to become the director of the Ocala/Marion County Fla. Convention and Visitors Bureau. Wagster's starting salary at the Cabarrus CVB in 2006 was $100,000.
CVB board member and Cabarrus County commission Chairman Jay White said the board decided to end Wagster's contract early to go in a new direction.
"Her contract expires in October and we were talking about whether or not to renew," White said. "The CVB board and DeSales came to the conclusion that we go our separate ways.
"There are a lot of new things coming here to the county and we're trying to figure out how do we get it out there. How do we get the biggest bang for our buck," White said. "The philosophy DeSales had in mind was different than what the board had in mind."
White said he wishes her well.
"She served us well for two years," White said.
Concord Mayor Scott Padgett said Wagster's familiarity with motorsports will make her a real asset to Speedway Motorsports.
"I think DeSales will do well there," he said. "I have high regards for her."
